There are many different characters on the show Spongebob Squarepants and they are all very different from one another. Take the main character of the show for example, Spongebob. "He lives in a pineapple under the sea" where some of the episodes take place. He has a pet snail named Gary who enjoy crawling around with the resemblence of a cat. Spongebob is involved in various activities such as jellyfishing, hanging out with his best friend Patrick Star, or working hard at the Krusty Krab as a frycook.

Next door to Spongebob lives an squid by the name of Squidward. Squidward also works at the Krusty Krab but is always pictured as being a laid back and boring character. He enjoys being fancy and better than everyone around him and playing his clairinet. Being alone is one of his favorite things to do, far from the annoyance of his neighbor, Spongebob.
Also in the same neighborhood as these two characters lives a starfish, rightfully named, Patrick Star. This fun-loving sea creature is Spongebob's best buddy and they do almost everything together. Patrick doesn't have a job and is almost always not in the episodes that involve Spongebob working long hours at the KK. He is also a major influence on Spongebob such as in the episode "Hooks" where Spongebob was easily persuaded to play on the fishing hooks, going against the orders of Mr. Krabs.
Another major character in the series is Sandy Cheeks, the squirrel who lives in a bubble under the sea. She enjoys playing with Spongebob but it can be tough being a squirrel who is forced to adapt to the underwater life after her departure from her homeland, Texas. When she goes out in public, she is forced to wear a protective suit so she can breathe and play with her friends. However, thinking she could survive in the underwater environment without her apparatus in one episode, almost proved to be her demise. This squirrel is very friendly and will always welcome you to her dome, unless its hibernation of course.
And finally, the last major character in the series is Mr. Krabs. This character is the boss of Spongebob Squarepants at the Krusty Krab and, by his name, is a crab. He is not usually willing to help and is by far the greediest member of the cast. Money is his life and he will stop at no means to get it. Mr. Krabs and Spongebob have a good relationship and there are not usually problems at work unless Patrick gets involved in the business.
There are also other characters that play important roles in the show such as Larry the Lobster, Pearl (Mr. Krabs' daughter), Plankton (Mr. Krabs nemesis), Mrs. Puff and various "fish-citizens" that are common to every episode.
