The 2010 baseball season has been a challenge for the Boston Red Sox, to say the least. The team has faced multiple injuries to key players in the game. Just when one player is well enough to return, another player goes down. This week, it was Kevin Youkilis’s turn on the disabled list, after he jammed his thumb while batting in the second game of a 4 game series against the Cleveland Indians. Luckily, the Red Sox could count on veteran player Mike Lowell to replace him at first base.
Mike Lowell has not had the chance to show his MVP-worthy skills very often this season. He is one of the older players on the team, and due to younger players coming up from the minors and Lowell's own injuries, he hasn't received the playing time he's had in past years. He was even one of the players seriously considered for a trade earlier this week. Luckily, Lowell stayed with his long time teammates as a member of the Red Sox. Now with Youkilis on the disabled list, his team really needs him and Mike Lowell is back to show why he still belongs in the majors.
Lowell hadn't played in a game since June, so many anticipated it may take him awhile to get back into the rhythm. It didn't take a few innings. It didn't even take one at bat. 1 swing is all it took and Lowell sent the ball sailing out of Fenway Park. Lowell received a standing ovation from the crowd. He showed why he has been such a key player for Boston, and proved that he deserves to play. Lowell is somebody the Red Sox really need right now and he delivered when they needed him the most. The home run was an incredible moment for Lowell, but his game didn't end there. Lowell went on to make an incredible out by sliding into first base later in the game. It was a very memorable game for the Boston team and Mike Lowell.
This will be a game no one in all of Red Sox Nation will ever forget. Lowell showed everyone, including himself, that he still has incredible skills as a professional baseball player. He proved he is a remarkable player and certainly made his presence known in Red Sox Nation. Mike Lowell's home run will go down as one of the most memorable moments in baseball history.
