Franklin, MA is perhaps best known for three major historical facts, it was the birthplace of Horace Mann, it has the oldest functioning single room schoolhouse and it is also home to the very first public library. Horace Mann is considered by many to be "The Father of American Public School Education". The Franklin Public Library was gifted several books by
Benjamin Franklin and in 1790 was the first library to actually loan books to the public at no charge. The Red Brick Schoolhouse has a long history and has been the subject of many funding shortfalls. In addition to volunteer opportunities available to help both the library, the schoolhouse and the historic society, there are many other places to volunteer in Franklin, MA. They include:

The partnership is also responsible for helping children in town celebrate Halloween without the worry that parents face by allowing children to trick or treat during daylight hours. Many downtown business owners participate in these events.
Franklin Lions Club
Since 1945, the Franklin Lions Club has helped sponsor a local little league team, donated money to Massachusetts Lions Eye Research, hosted the District 33K Lions Eyemobile and helped provide scholarships to students in town. This group of dedicated men and women do whatever they can to help the local community including donate to the food pantry, in the past they have hosted fundraisers to help provide funds for the library and have participated for many years in the 4th of July celebration. One of their signature projects, a holiday luncheon for seniors has been an annual event since 2000. This event serves nearly 200 senior citizens lunch on an annual basis and is a celebration of how small groups can work together to make the community a better place for everyone.
