A geek's guide to meeting people

Defining the idea of a geek is simple and difficult all at once.  A geek can be someone who is into computers (way too much, some might say), has all the latest tech gadgets, talks about shows like Dr. Who, reads magna, translates Latin for fun and eagerly awaits the Comic-Con convention.  But beyond their slightly larger heads (thanks to all that brain power that they use), geeks have seamlessly blended into “normal” society having become hip creating an important place in the technological and creative communities.

So where does a “geek” go if they want to meet people and surround themselves with those that get the geek?  Unlike many non-geeks, geeks will search for companionship in the ways they feel most comfortable: online.  Catering to the geeks desire to get connected with other geeks and their admirers, gk2gk.com, a dating site for geeks creates a safe, sane way for geeks to communicate without ever having to leave their computers.  Here geeks can create online profiles and list everything from the traditional age, height and weight to the more geeky favorite book, video game and geek.  Geeks can chat, email and admire other geeks and geek enthusiasts with ease.

In the event that the geek wants to meet someone in person, they are likely to try the local comic book store.  Comic book stores are the singles bar for the geek.  It’s a place that gathers reading materials, sometimes caffeinated beverages and with a renewed sense of cool, offers geeks a place to converge, congregate and converse for hours.    The pressure is off as geeks can be “in their element” and not worry about making a move on that hottie who is reading the latest DC Comic.  With the large variety of comics out there, there is always a great conversation starter, but beware, geeks are loyal to their favorite comics so have plenty of free time, a concrete point of view and a good knowledge of super hero mythology.

Geeks love films so it’s very possible to meet and mingle with other geeks at your local film discussion group.  Movie theatres, aware that geeks see flicks, have come up with a variety of meet-up opportunities to discuss past, present and future films catering to the geek mind.  Comic book inspired films have become Hollywood gold and geeks love to compare and contrast the movie version to that of the original comic.  Local movie theatres offer discussion
