Differences in plant growth with sunlight versus artificial light

by Kathleen Couch

Created on: August 03, 2010

And God said:  “Let there be light”.  And there was light. (Genesis)  For the best light available it is without a doubt, sunlight.  Sunlight provides the fullest spectrum light with just enough of all the colors needed for plant growth and production.  If the proper sunlight is available, no other light is better.

When things interfere with the available sun, then artificial light will make a successful substitute.  Weather conditions, clouds, smog, and short days or growing season are all things that interfere with the sun.  Interference to the sun is also trees or buildings that block the sun from getting to the plants.

You may decide to grow some vegetables, herbs, or flowers inside to prolong the growing season or provide the needed light through artificial means.  Or maybe just regular houseplants or vines will need a boost with artificial light.  Often the light through a window is not enough for a plant to be its’ healthiest.

When using artificial light you need to consider the type of bulb and light fixture to provide the best light.  The height and positions of the light fixture and length of time the light is on needs to be considered.

Let’s look at the FIVE types of bulbs used as grow lights and their features.

Metal Halide Grow Bulb

This bulb is one that imitates sunlight very closely.  Many gardeners highly recommend this bulb for a grow light.

High Pressure Sodium Grow Bulb

HPS grow bulbs are very high in the red and orange spectrum.  They help with flower and fruit production.  The HPS should be used in conjunction with a Metal Halide bulb.

LED Grow Bulb

The LED bulb is one of the newer ones on the market.  It gives excellent color and health to the plant and fruits, but the vegetation is a little slower in developing.  An LED is a good alternative if bulb heat may be a problem.  They also last a very long time.

T5 Fluorescent Grow Bulbs

Very little heat is transmitted, and they can be positioned closer to the plant.

Compact Fluorescent Bulb

Or CFL bulb is best for seedlings and small plants. Not much heat is produced, and little energy is used.  Multiple CFL bulbs may need to be used in different positions, such as top and sides of the plants.

Light Fixtures for Grow Bulbs

For the Metal Halide Grow Bulb the light fixtures are usually an overhead one with reflective features on the inside face.

The High Pressure Sodium Bulb uses the same
