Just because the American people have grown tired of being at war and enough lives have been lost for the cause to save Iraq does not mean that the US should just leave and hope for the best. Sudden withdraw of American presence in Iraq would cause immediate shock to the US established foundation and cause it to crumple. Only slowly and gradually can America take itself out of the involvement in Iraq.

The US fought to take over Iraq in order to liberate its people from tyranny and find and destroy the WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction). While we do know now that there were no WMD we now have to substitute our cause for the war as a fight against terrorism and the evil of Saddam Hussein's regime. Causing the US foundation in Iraq to crumple through sudden withdraw would give those who followed Saddam a chance to re-establish their authority over the people and put the country back into their terrible circumstances. What would America have left to show for the Iraq War? It would be turned into a war to search for weapons that were never their and to take over the oil in the country. Withdrawal would erase the only positive result of the war and that is the spread of freedom and democracy in Iraq.

The American people screamed for war and now that enough people have died they think that it is OK now to just go home. The people are satisfied and ready to stop the violence they had so quickly demanded. They're no better than little children that don't realize that they have to take responsibility for their actions with the rest of the world and that once you commit to such a huge task as war you cannot just decide to leave and not deal with the aftermath. The aftermath is what will determine how this American war will be viewed by the rest of the world.  This world view is all that matters to America right now as it tries to rebuilt the trust that the rest of the world had in it. After the truth about the lies of WMD the world has drastically shifted its outlook on the United States and it is the government's job to repair that broken image.

The government cannot simply follow the public’s constant changing mind and needs to demonstrate that a commitment is a commitment and it cannot simply be ignored.
