Don’t you love the pictures of closet organizer systems? After you spend thousands of dollars, and maybe add a crystal chandelier, the pictures show only a few clothes hanging in the closet. These systems would be nice if you have the budget, and the space to do it. In reality, most of us are limited in our space, and budget, and have a few more clothes than what is shown in an organized closet.
Before we go into ideas for cheap closet organizers, we must start with the basics. 1. Take everything out of the closet. 2. If there are things that have found their way into your closet that belong somewhere else, send them to their home. 3. Sort other items into three groups: Keep, Donate, and Trash. If you are strict with yourself on these steps, then you are ready for closet organizers that won’t break the budget.
Hangars
Throw out all those wire hangars. They tend to get tangled together, make bumps on shoulders of garments, and allow clothes to slip off. Invest in the plastic tubular hangars, or if you can spend more, purchase hangars that are made with non -slip covers.
Hangars that are tiered with clips save space and keep skirts and slacks neat.
Tiered hangars are made to hang up to six blouses in one vertical space.
Belt Organizers
There are several types of belt organizers available. Most have one hangar that goes over the rod, with extensions below so belts will easily hang.
Tie Organizers
Are made in much the same way as belt organizers but with extensions for ties.
Scarf Organizers
A scarf organizer uses a hanger that extends down, and has holes to store the scarf in a draped fashion.
Handbag Organizers
These may be shelves with dividers, a hanging system for the closet rod, or an over the closet door organizer.
Shoe Organizers
There are many options for shoes. Over closet door organizers made from metal, vinyl organizers that hang and have pockets for hanging, revolving metal organizers that sit on the floor, or a cubby hole organizer that makes additional shelf space and sits on a shelf or floor.
Hat Organizers
For baseball caps, vertical pole organizer are available that have clips to store the caps. For other types of hats, a standing pole tree, or divided shelves can be used.
Sweater and T-shirt Storage
An inexpensive solution is to purchase a canvas shelf organizer. This has a hook that goes over the closet rod, and hangs down with shelves
