Jamie T is part of an emerging musical movement including The Mystery Jets' which despite their different sounds have been grouped together and are referred to as Thamesbeat', this is due to the fact that these bands come from a similar area of South-West London. It is not possible to put Jamie T's style of music in to one category or another as it crosses many genres, there are elements of rap, hip-hop, dance and blues to name but a few on the album.
Jamie T's long-awaited debut album was finally released on January 29th 2007; the artist had previously released three singles from this album in the year-or-so leading up to the release date. The singles released were Sheila', If you got the money' and Calm down dearest' which were all well received by the music industry and the public alike.
Jamie T has a style that can sometimes be comparable to The Streets' in the way that his songs tend to be about real life situations and subject matter but with his own distinct delivery. On the subject of his delivery and real life content, he also sings using the words and phrases used in these situations which means that almost every (if not all) of the tracks contain very colourful language, so if you are easily offended by this then this is not the album for you, having said that I personally feel that this gave the songs more meaning as they felt more emotional and more believable.
He has a wide range of styles and themes on the album which probably cater for most tastes, the opening track Brand New Bass Guitar' is typical of the story-telling style that Jamie T tends to employ, it almost sounds ad-lib and displays a good sense of humour. The two tracks that really impressed me (other than those already released) were Back In The Game' which is an acoustic track with spoken rather than sung lyrics which is full of emotion and Pacemaker' which seems to be an amalgamation of parts of songs all stitched together, this will not appeal to everyone but I find it to be a track I just love to listen to.
I find this album to be easy to listen to and there are no tracks that I really dislike, if I had to choose my least favourite ones then they are probably Dry Off Your Cheeks' and Alicia Quays', but I still would not skip them as I do not dislike them that much. I also like all the little pieces of audio in between tracks, some of which are completely nonsensical but also hilarious especially the message about people riding around on bikes, pulling wheelies and thinking they're cool.
I would rate this album at least 9/10, it will not appeal to everyone but those that like his style will not be disappointed, I consider it a must have for your music collection.
