One of the more important decisions we make when decorating our home is what type of window treatments to use. We can coordinate our window treatments with existing accessories or go with something entirely different. We can use window treatments as a main feature in a room or we can downplay the window treatments to allow more focus in another area.
When considering window treatments, rather than opting for the usual shades, blinds, curtains and drapery, why not try something less traditional and more reflective of your style and personality? What are your interests, your hobbies, your favorite colors, your favorite things? Incorporate some of these into your window treatments.
Ten inventive ideas for window treatments:
1) If you don’t like curtains and other window coverings but want to give your windows some sparkle and pizzazz, add a few shelves and adorn with small colored bottles and pitchers. Browze your local antique shops and eBay for vintage crackle glass collectibles made by Blenko and Pilgrim Glass, very popular decades ago and still collected today. Use an array of bright colors such as cranberry, cobalt blue, green and amber. What a beautiful display when the sun shines through.
2) If you like the colored glass look but aren’t into bottles and knickknacks, how about a lovely stained glass window? You can buy windows ready-made and ready to install or you can buy kits and make your own. If you don’t want to actually install the window, frame it instead and hang it in your window for the same beautiful effect.
3) If you collect small objects that you would like to display, your windows can make the perfect display case. Again, add some shelves and arrange some of your prized glassware, old figurines and other collectibles. If you collect salt and pepper shakers, one of your kitchen windows would work perfectly for display. If you are decorating a recreation room or bar, stand some collectible beer trays in the window, add a few steins and decorative decanters for a nice look.
4) If you are handy with woodworking, make a wood valance or cornice for the top of your window. Add a scalloped edge, then paint, stencil or cover with fabric or wallpaper. Add a coordinating bottom tier curtain if you wish. You can order do-it-yourself valance and cornice kits online if that makes it easier.
5) If
