Poetry: Struggle in life

Once upon a time
I dreamed
Once upon a time
I lived
in a cabin
in the woods.
I awoke each morning
to the sound of birds and
the hush of peace in the air.
The thunderstorms rolling down
the mountain held at bay
by the sheltering arms
of the man I loved.

Once upon a time
I dreamed
Once upon a time
I lived
in a tent
in a meadow.
I awoke each morning
to the smell of wood smoke
and the mist of peace in the air.
The thunderstorms rolling across
the plain held at bay
by the sheltering arms of the friends I loved.

Once upon a time
I dreamed
Once upon a time
I lived
in a mansion
in a city.
I awoke each morning
to the feel of silk on my skin
and the ring of peace in the air.
The thunderstorms rolling across
the city held at bay
by the sheltering walls
of the home I loved.

Once upon a time
I dreamed
This morning
I awoke
In a bed
In a room
to the sound of fear
and the stench of despair in the air.
The thunderstorms rolled across
my mountains and plains and cities
held at bay only by a tenuous
grip upon my dreams.
