Materials used to make female barrier contraceptions

Women today can make use of various types of contraception. Until recently, female contraception offered no protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The appearance of the female condom changed the situation.

Female condoms are a type of barrier contraception, which works by hindering the passage of sperm to the uterus. Female barrier contraception is usually positioned in the vagina or right over the cervix. These contraceptive methods include the female condom, diaphragms, cervical caps and vaginal sponges.

What is female barrier contraception made of? The question can be answered in several ways. Silicone or latex is used in most cases. Sometimes, female barrier contraception is combined with a spermicidal gel for better effect.

These are the materials used in the creation of each type of female barrier contraception.

DIAPHRAGMS
The diaphragm resembles a cap that is positioned inside the vagina. Diaphragms are made of latex or silicone solely.

Diaphragms are made in various sizes in order to fit comfortably.

Women, who are allergic to latex, should refrain from using a diaphragm. Since it is positioned inside the vagina, the latex could sometimes lead to irritation, even if the person has no latex allergy.

CERVICAL CAPS
Cervical caps are much smaller than the diaphragm. They are placed directly over the cervix.

Cervical caps are made of silicone or rubber. Keep in mind that the silicone caps are disposable and can be used from 48 hours to three days.

VAGINAL SPONGES
The vaginal or contraceptive sponge contains a spermicidal gel that is slowly released into the vagina.

The ‘sponge’ itself is made of a soft and comfortable type of medical foam. Once positioned properly, the sponge interferes in no way with the sexual intercourse. It cannot be felt by either partner.

Vaginal sponges can be used for a period of up to 24 hours, after which their efficiency decreases.

FEMALE CONDOMS
The female condom resembles very much the male condom. It is positioned inside the vagina and held in position via a rubber ring.

The condom is made of latex or polyurethane.

Female condoms usually contain a lubricant. This barrier contraception method can be used only once. Make sure that you examine the expiration date before inserting the condom – female condoms that are past their expiration date could tear easily.

Female barrier contraception is very practical since it involves no hormones or complicated positioning procedures. A diaphragm can be reused, which makes it exceptionally convenient. Female barrier contraception is contraindicative for women who are allergic or who suffer easily from vaginal infections. The positioning of a foreign body inside the vagina increases the risk of irritation and inflammations.
