I was fourteen years old when my father asked me to go for a drive with him. As we got into the car, I asked where are we going? "Just a drive." He told me. We drove to the little airport in town and parked, as we watched the planes take off and land we had the talk. Thats what fathers and parents do. Now imagine if after parking and he began to talk I said to him, yeah I know I learned that in school. How at that moment would he have felt? Hurt, definitely. Cheated, maybe. Those are defining moments in a parent child relationship. Would the conversation have ended?, Possibly. Thankfully I didn't learn it in school and have that cherished memory.
When I did take health education it was quite boring. Listening to the text book terms of genitalia, and you can catch this, and no you can't get that from a toilet seat. It seemed to lack so much of what I was already taught. Now I understand that times are different today as this took place in 1981, but what lacked was the emotional side, the respect I should have for the other person. Are those now being taught in schools and organizations?
Are we going to teach below average looking or overweight people they are just as beautiful as the stunning thinner people? If so are we going to teach the stunning thin people they shouldn't feel guilty for the way are? Of course not. These are matters of opinion, matters of morals and values. Families are where these issues are taught, they are binding moments in a parent child relationship. Moments that are being stolen from us.George Washington may have chopped down the cherry tree, but liberals are chopping at the family tree.
These organizations and youth programs need to be a place for children to get away from the everyday pressures, not reminded of them. A place where they can say yeah I'm 12 years old and this fun. So the next time I pass by a cookie table or someone knocks on my door I'll still buy a couple of boxes. The children in front of me are not part nor they care of the politics we speak they're just selling cookies.Got milk?
