Reflections: The meaning of beauty as 'in the eye of the beholder'

Beauty is a strange strange thing. It can mean different things to different people. To some, Beauty is in what you see on the outside and to others it is what is on the inside that counts. Some people think beautiful women have to be thin and skinny while other see beautiful women as curvy and full. And the same applies to men too. Different cultures have different concepts of beauty. In Ancient China, having tiny feet was considered beautiful so women had their feet bound so tightly that they could barely walk. In Victorian England, having a tiny waist was considered beautiful so women wore corsets and some even had their lower ribs removed. Even today, so many women go under the knife all in the pursuit of beauty

Men come in all types. I’ve never been one to go for the young, hunky, manly types; the types you see in Calvin Klein magazines. I go for the unique types. I consider a beautiful man as one who has traits like no other man. Maybe I’m weird, but I like it when a guy looks a little weird. Maybe he might have proportions that are off like really long legs or a nose that looks a little cooked. Or a voice and a way of talking that sounds unique unlike any other way that I have heard. I think what makes a guy cute on the outside are flaws. I like guys who have not-perfect skin, funny hair, and uneven features. I like guys who look funny and who look different. Beauty for me is more than skin deep. I like men who are honest and sincere. And I love shy guys. I can’t stand when a guy comes up to me and starts hitting on me. I like to observe guys and pick out the ones that I like and be the one to make the first move.

Beauty can also concern other things besides men and women. One person may consider a particular place to be very beautiful while another may hate it. I may consider a particular painting beautiful while another may consider it god awful ugly. What’s most important is that each person has a good idea of what they consider beautiful so that they can know what they want to surround themselves with. And what is even more important is that every person eventually finds the beauty in themselves no matter what others say.
