No matter what it is you are looking to crochet, the truth is you are bound to find a crochet pattern for it out there somewhere and Turtle crochet patterns are no exception. In fact, they are everywhere. More and more patterns are easily becoming available online, but running through a search engine to find them can take hours.  That is way I have compiled a list of free crochet patterns online, downloadable crochet patterns, and a few great books to check out so that you can find exactly the pattern you are looking for, with minimal effort.

*Websites to Browse Through

Crochet Pattern Central has thousands of patterns.  It is probably the most comprehensive list of crochet patterns on the web.  For their page on turtles check out: http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/turtl es.php. This site is filled with so many great patterns that even once you find the one you want, you’ll probably keep looking.  To make it easy for you they even use symbols next to the links to let you know if the pattern is in PDF format, or if you will need to register with the site to view the pattern – but don’t worry, each one of those sites are free to register, and it will open up your access to many more free crochet patterns.

Squidoo at http://www.squidoo.com/crochet-turtle-patterns also has a nice list of great patterns.  This site is nice because the patterns are separated by websites with free patterns, Blogs and books.  While a few of these patterns can be found at Crochet Pattern Central, there are still a few new ones to check out.

Allcrafts.net at http://www.allcrafts.net/crochet/crochettoys.htm contains a couple more really cute patterns.  However, keep in mind that this site is filled with all sort of animal patterns so you will have to weed your way to find the ones you want.  Luckily, each pattern has a picture so scanning through them is quick and easy.

For a few more great patterns try these sites: For a spiraled shell try http://debs1967.blogspot.com/2009/10/turtle-applique -crochet-pattern-thread.html

*Downloadable Patterns for Purchase

Check out this pattern available at e-patternscentral.com: http://www.e-patternscentral.com/detail.html?prod_id =6435&cat_id=289.  Perfect if you are looking to add a little more color to your crocheting.

For a list of several patterns try Esty at http://www.etsy.com/search_results.php?search_query= crochet+turtle+pattern&search_type=handmade. This site often lists over 50 patterns for turtles at a time, but be careful, the prices can range from cheap to highly overpriced.  My suggestion for you is to pick a price you are willing to pay for a pattern, and then not even bother to look at the patterns over that price.

*Books

For great stuffed Toys try:

Roly Poly Turtle Pattern, available in “Vanna’s Afghan and Crochet Favorites” from Oxmoor House, “Roly Poly Toys” by Becky Stevens from Leisure Arts Leaflets, and if you can get a hold of it, try Baby Misty Turtle by Fran Goreham from the June 2005 issue of Crochet World Magazine.

If you are looking for a great turtle afghan pattern then try “Color-Bright Creatures” by Anne Halliday and from Leisure Arts Leaflets.

No matter what pattern you find, don’t forget to have fun with it.  Try making a turtle family, or using wild and crazy colors.  And don’t be afraid to experiment with pattern ideas, you’ll be amazed at what you can come up.
