Because it was hot outside, I decided to turn on the car and get the air conditioner going. I then got my son (2 1/2 years old) strapped into his car seat and then my daughter (1 1/2 years old) into the other car seat. As I walked from my daughter's door to my door I heard that horrible sound.... CLICK!
That's right; the doors to my car had locked. To this day I am still unsure of how the doors automatically locked by themselves. They had never done it before, and have never done it again, but to be sure, every door in the car was locked... shut... with my babies inside and me, their mommy, standing outside. My keys? They were inside the air conditioned, radio-turned on car. My spare keys? In the locked house on the hook. My husaband's keys? With him on a trip 2,000 miles away in California.
Most people may have neighbors that they leave a spare set with. But we lived in such a secluded area that we couldn't see our neighbor's houses and didn't know any of them. While I knew my children were safe in the cool car I still ran to the nearest house, but no one was home. I then ran past my house to the next nearest house and borrowed a phone to call 911.
1 hour later, with two children crying, the locksmith finally arrived to get my children out of the car. Fireman came to my house; mostly I think to mock me (since they couldn't/wouldn't do anything). Don't you know that my oldest son HAD been escaping his car seat up until that day, but no matter how I tried talking to him from the outside of the car he just wouldn't un-do his seatbelt.
The event was traumatic for me and for the time-being traumatic for my children. While they may never remember that day I sure will.
