With all the evidence that show Iraq war was completely un-necessary, the tug of war between Republicans and Democrats over the war seems very ironic.
Saddam Hussein was an evil man, no doubt. He gassed own citizens-the Kurds, he was brutal against the dissidents. He was also an enemy of the terrorists-al Qaida and its sympathizers. When Saddam was in power, Iraq was not a heaven for terrorists.
There is no evidence suggesting that Saddam was supporting terrorists against the US. So attacking the country after 9/11 rightfully smells. Then why are the Republicans and Democrats fighting over the war? The answer is fairly simple, both the parties are directly responsible for the war fiasco and now they are struggling to place the blame on each other.
Republicans say that war in Iraq should go on as long as there is a single terrorist in that country. Well, a valid point it seems but there is small problem. Iraq is an independent country with its own language, culture, religion and hundreds of years of political and social baggage. So to say the parachute liberators (in this case the Americans)who do not have any idea about Iraq's history, culture, language and the baggage, will win the war and capture the hearts and minds of the Iraqi citizens is just nonsense.
So then let the Democrats jump in with their notions, which sadly are no better than the Republican's. They say that to pull out the military from Iraq is the best option but then are afraid to say that publicly or loudly enough. Democrats are afraid of calling for the troop withdrawal because in their calculation it will harm their presidential hopes. So they do their flip flop and bring in the occasional "non binding" resolution, just to put up a show that they are doing something to end the war in Iraq. Do they think Americans are that challenged? That the public will not figure out that they are chicken? Well, we all are waiting for their official response.
No matter what they believe should happen in Iraq, both Democrats and Republicans are responsible for the failure there. Thousands of Iraqi civilians have been killed, more than 4,000 US soldiers have been lost and billions of dollars wasted. Instead of engaging in a mindless tug of war, both sides should come together and devise a workable exit strategy. President Obama, who promised an administration that would promote bi-partisanship should start the process by taking to Republican leadership and listen to their views too.
