Afghan War documents: Implications of the leaked documents

by Bruce Tyson

Created on: July 31, 2010

When the world awoke to the Wikileaks document dump containing thousands of secret reports about the war in Afghanistan downloaded by a renegade U.S. Army security analyst, it learned some previously unknown and potentially embarrassing facts about the war effort, although many now consider the leak significant due to its potentially unseemly implications about the state of the news media, politics, and Web site marketing.

Left-wing media involvement

Revelations that Wikileaks choreographed its publication of the online Afghan War Diary with outlets traditionally aligned with leftist causes such as The New York Times immediately caused many to suspect that a political agenda drove the release more than any so-called desire for transparency. Possessing the contents of the Wikileaks publication weeks in advance, several newspapers trumpeted the Wikileaks story in a coordinated effort that propelled it to the forefront of international attention.

In the midst of what appear to be its final death throes, the New York Times probably gained a lot from one of the biggest news stories of the year: an out of control war being fought with an ally, Pakistan, that often acts as an enemy. Much of the published content, however, contained unsubstantiated claims and hearsay by factions within Afghanistan distrustful of the Pakistani regime, suggesting that the release implies more than what meets the eye.

The age of the content perhaps says more about the motives behind the orchestrated propagation of the war material by the New York Times than anything else: all of the 91,000 reports pertain to the war effort as led by the Bush regime. Some find it fantastically coincidental that not even one of the reports have anything to do with the how the Obama regime prosecutes the war. Regardless of whether the newspapers worked with Wikileaks to “sanitize” the content of the reports or if they seized the opportunity to (1) blame Bush for the war from which the Democrats now seem to want to distance themselves and (2) score political points by illustrating the dramatic shift in competence the Obama regime has demonstrated as it seeks to right the wrongs of the “foreign contingency operation” in Afghanistan.

Politics

To some, the involvement of partisan and leftist media in the promotion of the Wikileaks story points to an even more sinister and dangerous willingness of the regime to score political points at the potential expense of American lives. Some speculate
