Getting started with podcasting

Podcast(plural podcasts)

An audio programme in a compressed digital format, delivered via an RSS feed over the Internet to a subscriber and designed for playback on computers or portable digital audio players, such as the iPod.

The podcast is sweeping the world with increasing popularity. As you might of guessed from the definition above(provided by wiktionary), a podcast is pretty much a pre-recorded audio broadcast which is downloaded from the internet and played on your mp3 players.

The purpose of podcasting is usually to advertise a product or company, and also to deliver specialist information to a target audience. Of course, being a free sevice, there is no defined content for a podcast, other than having no racist or grossly inappropriate content, so you may talk for however long you wish, talking complete drivel, of course, not much interest will be aroused by listeners.

The success of your podcast is determined by the amount of feedback you receive. The feedback is usually made up of the number of listeners, downloads and subscribers. To make it big with podcasting, you will need lots and lots of people downloading your podcast, this is what determines the best podcast.

This technology may seem mindboggling however, creating a podcast is not as difficult as you may think. In fact, podcasting is actually free, aside from the cost of a computer, internet connection and a microphone.

Recording your podcast is relatively simple, all you will need is a microphone which connects to your computer, recording software which converts recordings into mp3 format(free, link provided) and an original idea. Ideally, you should be recording for at least 15 minutes and 45 minutes max, depending on your topic. Another tip is that listeners prefer when there is 2 or three voices on the podcast and it will make it easier for you to record as you can bounce ideas off eachother and help eachother out restricting the amount of 'dead-air' time(no sound).

There are many websites which accept podcasters from around the world for free(links provided at bottom of article). The real 'big-daddy', in terms of podcasting, is undoubtedly iTunes, a free service which combines a media player with an online music store. Even if you do not own an iPod, iTunes is still highly recommended, especially if you are interested in podcasts. iTunes provides a vast directory of podcasts under vaious categories, where there bound
