The United Kingdom is well known for it's seaside towns and beach getaways. These resorts attract worldwide tourism and all offer a variety of things to do an see while indulging the visitors in complex historical tales and landmarks that make up each towns character.
Below are five of the best seaside resorts in the UK.
5. Brighton.
Brighton is located along the south coast of England. It has always been a hot spot for day trippers and vacationers. It was generally seen as a health resort, but after the arrival of the railway in 1841, the town attracted visitors and tourists from all over the country to enjoys its beaches and sights.
Brighton has two piers. Brighton Pier features many sources of entertainment, including a fair and many restaurants. The West Pier was closed in 1975 for renovation, but progress was never made. After suffering two fires in 2003, all that remains is the frame, standing alone out to sea. Plans have been approved to rebuild a new landmark on this site.
The town has featured in a lot of media and fiction. Due to Brighton being a popular place for Mods and Rockers in the 1960's, it was a major setting for the film Quadrophenia. It was also the setting for Brighton Rock, a book by Graham Greene and a film starring Richard Attenborough, as well as Tommy, based on the album by The Who.
Brighton is also a popular get away for celebrities, with Paul McCartney, Norman Cook, aka Fat Boy Slim, and Zoe Ball each owning homes in the area.
Since it has such a varied culture scene and wide range of entertainment, and is a mere hour from London, Brighton is a very popular stop for travelers from all over the world who visit the UK.
4. St. Ives.
'As I was going to St Ives, I met a man with seven wives...' is the famous riddle based on the quaint Cornwall seaside resort of St. Ives. This town is home to a varied life of culture. Many artists find inspiration in this little town, including a branch of the Tate Gallery.
It is a town known for other mediums of art, with popular festivals; the May Day festival, the St Ives Feast – which celebrates the founding of the town, as well as the September Festival, which is just over two weeks of art and music celebration.
Other than enjoying the art scene, visitors can relax on the sands and take a dip in the Celtic sea. St Ives was considered 2007's best seaside resort by The Guardian.
