I want to start by saying that “Clash of the Titans” is my all-time favorite movie, ever. This means that if I am sent to hell – and get to pick one movie that will be played for an eternity - I will pick the original 1981 version. With that said, I was a little worried about the bad reviews I had read regarding the new 2010 version. It seemed that the younger generation, who had not seen the original, liked it – but the old-timers who saw and loved the original – were not happy.
Those that were unimpressed did not like the way the storyline was mixed up – and even changed in some places. I myself was upset that a couple components were missing, but I will get into that in the next paragraph. Now that I have seen it, and have had a good night’s sleep to think about it, I think this new version was awesome. What fun would it have been if I knew everything to expect while watching the remake? This 2010 version mixed it up to the point that I did not know what to expect, which led to the “sitting on the edge of my seat” feeling and some definite surprises.
I figure the parts that were not included in this remake are exactly what were disappointing to other die-hard fans. The first relied heavily on the Thetis/Calibos/Princess Andromeda storyline. Without this – we are missing one of my favorite scenes – when the head of the Thetis statue falls off, rolls to the ground, and starts to talk. This scene scared the crud out of me when I was young! We also don’t have the scene of the creepy vultures who transported the sleeping princess to the swamp. In fact, all the swamp scenes are gone including when Perseus saves Pegasus, and when he chops off Calibos’s hand. And what about Pegasus? Well! They show a group of beautiful white winged horses, but this is not Pegasus. The Pegasus in this movie is a huge black stallion, and is not nearly seen enough, in my opinion.
The two other pieces that are missing, that disappointed me the most, are Bubo and the Hydra. At one point Bubo is pulled out of a pile of mess, and the soldier says, “just leave that.” That is all we see of Bubo. The five-headed Hyra is also mentioned, which leaves the viewer to think perhaps we will see it sometime within the movie, but it never happens.
All in all this is a great movie, and not only would I watch it again – but it is what we call a "keeper”, meaning we will have to buy it and add to our collection. As I mentioned before, it is not an exact remake. If you are expecting to see every scene replicated you just may not like it. BUT – if you appreciate that anticipation of “what is going to happen next”, I think you will love this modern digitally-enhanced version of “Clash of the Titans.”

In an era where remakes are almost as commonplace as new movies, 1981’s Clash of the Titans seemed like a ripe candidate.
