It would seem that Christina Aguilera has lost her way with her new album ‘Bionic’. Is it because she has lost touch with her audience since becoming a wife and mother? Who knows, but this mediocre piece of dull, uninspiring work has proved to be a nail in the coffin for her popularity.
Although Christina might like to describe ‘Bionic’ as a unique mix of many forms and styles of music it sadly fails to inspire. For such an incredibly talented singer this must surely be her blandest album to date.
‘Bionic’ debuted on the U.S. charts at no. 3 but didn’t take long to dive out of the top ten. This is Christina’s fourth album and she has attempted a kind of futuristic electro-pop sound, reminiscent of Lady Gaga, but has failed miserably. There are similarities to ‘Gaga’ but unfortunately she just doesn’t manage to pull it off.
The first single ‘Not Myself Tonight’ relies a lot on drum intense backing tracks and a synth. The videos endeavor to shock doesn’t quite happen. Christina might have a killer bod and she knows how to swing it around but she just looked rather sleazy in her attempts at a dominatrix, grinding with her dancers.
Musically, ‘Woohoo,’ manages a little better. It’s an amalgamation of a bit of R & B, Reggae and Electronica. Listening to it for the first time is almost enjoyable but the lyrics are somewhat embarrassing, and after a while it becomes too much to bother with.
There are some songs that remind us of the ‘old’ Christina, showing of her vocals at their best, ‘Prima Donna’ being one. It’s suitably pleasant to listen to, even a bit fun with its Pop/R&B beat.
‘Sex For Breakfast’ and ‘As I Am’ also gives us hints of why Christina is the artist that she is but the second half of the album turns out to be an complete turn off. The synthesizing of a lot of her voice is all so very ‘80’s’ and she doesn’t manage to make any headway with the lyrics on some of the tracks.
Overall, the album lacks substance and oomph. It is grossly overlong and can be very confusing in its delivery. Hopefully Christina Aguilera will see that trying to imitate artists that are making their own mark in the music industry, doing their own thing, is not a clever or intuitive move to make. She is very talented and has already made her mark, so why the need to emulate anyone else?
