Taking the steps to a makeover of your style

by Kiandra Dixon

Women's fashion comes in a plethora of styles: preppy, chic, romantic, classic, tomboyish, bohemian or earthy and so on and so forth.  Think of the style that appeals or gravitates to you more.  It doesn't have to be just one style.  You can rock the bohemian look one day and preppy the next.  The styles that appeal to you are the ones that resonate with your inner personality and you feel.  So how can you makeover your style so that your style reflects your true self AND look good and be smart while doing it? Here are a few tips to assist us in making over our style:

 1. Learn your body type-There are many shows on television that document fashion makeovers for several body types and there are many books on the market that can help you learn what your body type is.  If you can afford it, you can also consult an image consultant.  But many women do not have that luxury.  Once you learn your body type, you can choose pieces that flatter you.  Do you know why they create different shape skirts?  Or different style shirts?  It's not just to add variety to fashion.  It is to create clothes to specifically fit a certain body type.  A woman that is full chested may not look good with a full ruffled neckline shirt, whereas a woman that is small chested or average will be able to pull it off.  Remember this when the latest hot fashion item is “in”.  Just because it's “in” does not mean it will look good on you.

2. Look through fashion magazines or fashion websites to get ideas and learn to create “looks”-The benefits of consulting fashion magazines is that they do not just show you random clothes, they show you complete outfits or “looks”.  Often times you may see a fashion spread that shows you how you can put a certain look together from the more expensive outfit to the less expensive outfit.  After all, how many of us can afford a $1,000 plus outfit?  Money does not have to stand in the way of having great style.  Again, it's not so much about what you've paid for the clothes, it's about how you put the outfit together.  A woman can be dipped in designer name brand head to toe and still look wrong. We see it all the time in celebrity fashion hits and misses. Meanwhile a woman can make a $200 dollar or less outfit look like she just came off the run way by following guidelines in the magazines about how to put the outfit or look together.

3. Buy smart-In your quest to have a fashion makeover, don't put your self in unnecessary debt or spend your rent money on those new pair of Prada shoes. If you can afford it without going way over your head, by all means indulge.  But for the most part, shop smart.  Take a percentage of your income and save it for those huge discount sales that were so good you had to miss out on them because you didn't have any money to buy what you wanted.  Take advantage of sales and clearance racks at department stores to buy pieces that maybe a bit on the expensive side.  You can find some really good quality pieces to add to your wardrobe without breaking the bank.  If it's not beneath you, you can also find some sweet gems at the thrift stores.  Buy more accessories than clothing pieces-accessories can completely change the look of an outfit and help you save money.  Instead of buying 10 pairs of jeans, you can use the 3 good pairs you have, pair it up with some great tops and wonderful accessories and create multiple looks.  Play it up, jazz it down.  It's up to you.

If you're looking at yourself in the mirror and the clothes you're wearing really doesn't seem to reflect your true self and you feel you need some fine tweaking, undergoing a makeover does not have to be a daunting task.  Following these steps will help set you on the right path to start letting that inner you shine through!
