A guide to equipment used by ghost hunters

Over the past 20 years or so, ghost hunting has come a long way. Thanks to the many television shows and movies, the idea of being a paranormal investigator has become quite popular. There are literally hundreds of organized groups in every state of the United States as well as many other countries. Ghost hunting is not a new idea though. People have had an interest in contacting spirits for hundreds of years now. But today modern technology has helped enhance the experience. Here’s a guide to the equipment being used by most ghost hunters today.

Flashlight – Obvious if you’re going to be walking around in the dark you’re going to need some light to guide you. Every good ghost hunter has a trusty flashlight at the ready. Any old simple one will do. But a solid LED flashlight is best. You may also want to consider one that has a wristband strap and a carry pouch that attaches to your belt. Some fancier models are also available with red and blue filters for the bulb. As a back up you may want to keep a shake light or crank light in your kit in case your batteries die. And if you want to look like a dorky miner you could use the hands-free headlamp. Most of these are available for a fair price at your local electronics or hardware store.

Audio Recorders – On most ghost hunts one of the things you’re trying to do is make contact with a spirit or two. One way of doing this is by asking a series of questions and hope that you get a response. In most cases if you do get a response you likely won’t hear it until you have played it back on your audio recorder. This is called an EVP or Electronic Voice Phenomena. They’re very rare and hard to detect. It is believed that spirits communicate with very few words and it is usually in the lower spectrum of our hearing. Most people prefer a digital recorder over a tape recorder. Mainly because it’s easier to use and there are less moving parts in the recorder which can lead to unknown sounds on the tape. Plus there’s the cost of all those blank cassette tapes. Digital audio recorders are quite affordable and easy to find at any electronics store. You’ll want to get one with a decent amount of memory and some sort of way to connect it to a computer to review the audio more closely. Make sure it has a USB connector or a line out jack.

Cameras – Photography has been used in ghost hunting for many years. And the technology of cameras has come a long way too.
