Side effects of Accuhist PDX

Accuhist PDX is an over the counter syrup preparation. It contains a mixture of Brompheniramine, Dextromethorphan, Phenylephrine and Guaifenesin.

What is Bromphniramine?

It is a medication used to block, chemical called histamine in the body. Histamine is responsible for the symptoms of cough and cold.

What is Dextromethorphan?

It is a substance used in blocking some neurotransmission inside the brain, which is responsible for the cough.

What is Phenylephrine?

It is a chemical that constricts blood vessels inside the nasal lining, which is responsible for the nasal congestion seen in common cold.

What is Guaifenesin?

It is a chemical, which thins out the mucous. So mucous can flow easily and eases the congestion in the throat and lungs.

Accuhist PDX is used in sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, and cough and chest congestion. It is also used in itchy or watery eyes. It is effective in treating the symptoms of allergies like hives, skin rash and itching as well. Another indication is the common cold.

What are the things you should know before taking Accuhist PDX?

If you are taking other drugs including other over the counter drugs, then you should consult your doctor before taking this preperation. You should not take alcohol containing drinks while on Accuhist PDX.

This medication can cause drowsiness and impaired thinking, so do not drive vehicles or operate machinery, while on medication.

If you are taking a drugs in the family MAO inhibitors, then you should not take this medication.

What are the common side effects?

If you have following conditions inform your doctor before taking this medication.

* Kidney disease

* Diabetes

* Liver disease

* Increased eye pressure (Glaucoma)

* Heart disease

* High blood pressure

* Thyroid disorders

* Enlarged Prostrate and urinary retention

Discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant or breast feeding before taking Accuhist PDX as well.

What are the serious side effects that need immediate medical help?

* Anaphylactic reaction is the most serious side effect. But it is very rare. It is characterized by wide spread hives, difficulty in breathing, swelling of the face, throat and tongue.

* Fast pounding heart beat (palpitations).

* Slow breathing

* Confusion, hallucinations and unusual behavior

* High blood pressure

* Urinary retention: - Urinating less than usual

What are the other side effects that are less serious?

They are dry mouth, nausea, stomach irritation, blurred vision, sleep disturbances, dizziness, drowsiness, problems in concentration and headache.
