Prostate cancer eventually affects one of five men after age 50. The ailment kills more men than lung cancer, and any other cause of death in males except heart disease. Therefore, adult men must exercise a lifetime awareness of the dangers of the disease.
Every male over the age of 40 should get a thorough prostate exam at least once a year. There is no definite known cause of the disease, except perhaps a hereditary potential. Sometimes there is an indication of approaching prostate cancer when the physician sees gradual enlargement of the gland. If caught in time, there are therapies and medications that can alleviate the problem and possibly prevent the development of the disease.
Research also shows that a healthy lifestyle may prevent the disease. Smoking, which is the cause of many other forms of cancer, should be avoided. Carrying extra weight and lack of exercise are also factors. As with all other ailments that affect men as they age, prostate cancer prevention is an intelligent way to enjoy healthier and happier retirement years.
