Arkansas is an outstanding destination for vacationing families.  There are a wide range of activities in the state that are sure to please travelers of any age.  From big city adventure and theme park excitement to the exploration of rugged mountain landscapes, the state of Arkansas has it all.

Those families looking for inexpensive outdoor fun will find what they are looking for in the ancient Ozark Mountains of Northern and Northwest Arkansas.  There are an abundance of hiking trails which snake their way over and around the rustic hills.  The Ozarks are also home to commercial caves, such as

Mystic Caverns, which are safe for family exploration.  Perhaps the best in outdoor activity in Arkansas is floating the Buffalo National River.  The river is well known for its scenic views and provides a true glimpse into the natural beauty of the Ozarks.  A drive from Harrison to Russellville via Scenic Highway 7 will be enhanced by the majestic scenery found along the roadway, including the Arkansas Grand Canyon.

For more “civilized” vacations, the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville offers a variety of entertainment options for all ages.  During the summer months the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, the AA affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, play their home games at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale.  The University of Arkansas main campus is located in Fayetteville and a Razorback sporting event is always an exciting time.

For families vacationing in Central Arkansas, the capital city of Little Rock is the place to be.  A tour of the Arkansas Capitol, the Old Statehouse, and the William J. Clinton Presidential Library would be a great destination for those looking to add educational opportunities to their trip.  The Little Rock Zoo is a fantastic place to spend quality family time and view animals from around the world.  Professional sports can also be seen in the Little Rock area.  The Arkansas Travelers, the AA affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, play their home games at Dickey-Stephens Park across the Arkansas River in North Little Rock.  Wild River Country, the largest water park in Arkansas, is also located in North Little Rock.

The city of Hot Springs, while home to non-family activities such as horse racing, also offers opportunities for family fun.  Magic Springs Theme Park features daring rides, a water park, and entertainment for visitors of all ages.  The thermal springs found throughout the city are also another attraction sure to spark the interest of most family groups.

Arkansas is a great place for family fun.  The state can serve host to a “stereotypical” family vacation, or can provide an opportunity to step outside the vacation box and experience nature up close and personal.  No matter the choice, there is little doubt a trip to Arkansas is one that will not be forgotten.  As its nickname once proclaimed, Arkansas is the “Land of Opportunity.”
