Poetry: Understanding relationships

Husband

In him, I have met my challenge
Had my wounds rubbed raw
Cried myself to sleep time and again
I’ve been rejected and shied away from him

The rain has fallen more times than I’ve seen the sun
My pain has often overshadowed the fun
The tears fall freely and hide the smiles
My down cast heart breaks with each trial

But in him, I have learned what love means
Experienced more hope than I’d ever seen
Known more comfort and strength than I knew
Found God’s mercies and grace in truth

Time slips away and we lose sight of each other
Find ourselves roommates instead of lovers
Trudging through life on auto pilot
Not fighting but not loving, our silent riot

Awakening is the most painful of things
Cracking the shelter I’ve made with my dreams
Reaching out is frightening at best
The path I want most is the one I most dread
God’s grace and provision must for now suffice
Bring me full circle and renew my life

Starting over with this man that I chose
Whose worth is far greater than I’ve ever known
Whose breath is more precious to me than gold
This man will I stand by until we have grown old
