There have been many good reasons quoted over the years as to why there should not be a death penalty. Yet if we are to keep the use of the death penalty at bay there must be a serious alternative. Life imprisonment is what we have today; a noble sentiment. But what happens when life doesn't mean life? What then?
Unfortunately, in the UK, this is no longer the case. People are let out on "licence" after only a few years, and whilst some may prove worthy of this early release, there are a large number who not only re-offend in some way, but also kill; this has been known to happen more than once with the same offender.
Whilst I accept our justice system is so poor that it is possible to execute an innocent person, we cannot let people out of prison to prey on other law abiding people, especially if there is a chance that the prisoner released on license could kill again. All lives are precious!
The UK government says that the prisons are full and so is releasing people early, placing serious felons, including lifers on the streets. This is no answer either. Life has to mean life; a person who has purposely killed another must be made to pay in equal amount for that life they took. If that means they have to spend the rest of their lives in prison because society wants to be sure it doesn't kill anyone erroneously, so be it, but no early parole! If there are not enough prisons then more should be built. Unfortunately, our government is too afraid of the prisoners to do that
