Why beauty is only skin deep

Some of the most beautiful people I've met have not been aesthetically pleasing. Some of the most unpleasant beings to cross my path have been visually mesmerizing. Over the years, it has occurred to me that some attractive individuals are particularly unpleasant since they have never had to develop their social skills. The abundance of less attractive individuals constantly feeding their egos and catering to their every need, suppresses the need for the beautiful one to learn how to make an effort with others. And, why should they since they get everything they want due to their good looks. Do you think anyone says no to Gisele Bundchen or Ana Beatriz Barros? I sincerely doubt it! Their perfectly aesthetic faces adorn fashion magazines and billboards, reinforcing the global belief of exterior beauty.

I grew up reading Vogue' magazine, believing that the images of Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell et al, were that of divine goddesses. They appeared to have it all: looks, great bodies, money and people fawning over them, telling them how beautiful they are. But when you delve into the recent shenanigans of an icon known only for her beauty like Naomi Campbell, if the reports of cat fighting and verbal abuse are to be believed, it reveals one spoiled individual in need of help. It always amazes me that she can smile sweetly for the cameras when two hours prior, she had (allegedly) struck a staff member with a cell phone and put her in hospital. This is definitely evidence of beauty being only skin deep.'

It's not just supermodels to whom this label may be attributed. Just the other evening, I had a date with an, out of work, actor. I could see from his photograph that he was very good looking and because he had taken the time to write more than I look for wife/ sex, here's my mobile number,' I decided to meet him. He turned out to be even better looking in the flesh, but my goodness didn't he know it! He struck me as the type of person who would use his looks to further his career. When he admitted that he would sleep with a casting director in order to win an acting job, I knew in the long run that we would not get on. Of course, I came to this conclusion after he had also clearly shown his disinterest in me, and the date. He poured scorn on my suggestion that no matter how handsome a guy was, I would have to speak to him to decide if I wanted to date him. The actor was devastatingly attractive, but needed external reassurance, due to his obvious insecurity (no doubt fueled by the fact that he was out of work!) He relied upon his looks, rather than nurturing his talent, to his own detriment. I found it hugely comical that his last job as Mr Badger in the Wind and the Willows' required him to wear stage make up to transform his recognisable features!

The most beautiful people I have ever met, are always humble and would never dream of relying on their looks, or anything short of hard work and talent to propel themselves. People who are willing to get their hands (and faces) dirty and who treat others with kindness and respect are the beautiful' ones. Some may be physically stimulating, or not. But these are the people society should choose to focus on and hold in high regard, after all beauty does fade eventually
