A dog is man's best friend. The same can't be said for an alarm system. Part of a dog's makeup that proves the original statement is that they are a protective species. A well trusted dog derives its own happiness from the happiness and well-being of its master. A dog will be diligent and observant. It knows if something is different because a dog learns very well their surroundings. The same can't be said for an alarm.

I do not want to be taken for an anti-alarm person. I have an alarm myself. We have had one for six years and have always felt satisfied with the service and price. Alarms do have limitations however. For one, an alarm can only be effective when they are activated. They are not on guard all the time. We as humans can forget to turn them on They also can't detect if someone you know has turned attacker.

A dog can be on the spot, always activated, and they are tuned to our behaviors. Dogs can intervene on our behalf when a situation turns dangerous. A dog is closer akin to a body guard than an alarm system. They perform both duties. First, like an alarm they can detect and alert you to danger. Next, they can take immediate action to help you survive. They can also make a lot of noise that often gets amplified by other dogs in the neighborhood.

An alarm system can not be everywhere at all times. While the more you spend the more coverage you get, there are often dead spots or holes in the system. To close up a dog's "dead spots" you can get more dogs. Some people may be willing to challenge one dog, but rarely will anyone consciously take on two. A dog can offer us more emotional security because we can physically see them working on our behalf. They can follow us around as we check out our house and yard. Most security systems can't do that. They also become emotionally involved with our children. Dogs learn our habits and routines and become concerned when something is out of place. An alarm can not do that.

Again, I would say that an alarm is good. Six of my neighbors who have been broken into in the last year felt the same way. Alarms are good but dogs are better.
