Tips for planning a kayaking trip

There are a number of things that you need to do to get ready for a kayaking trip. Every kayaking trip is different so it's important to make sure you're planning for the type of kayaking trip you are embarking on. First let's talk about the typical summer day trip as this is the most common kayaking trip people make.

During the summer you should make sure to have clothes that can keep you cool while protecting you from the sun. All too often kayakers wear clothing that keeps them cool, but leaves their bodies directly exposed to the sun. Since when you're kayaking there's a good chance you will be in the sun for a long time it's good to have clothing that covers your skin, while still keeping you cool. A good hat, preferably one that shields your neck is a must-have for summer kayaking trips.

If you are doing a weekend trip then your packing job will become more complex as you will need to pack food and supplies for staying overnight. Kayaking for an entire day can be exhausting so be prepared to be tired as the sun starts to go down. If you are staying overnight you'll want to pack a sleeping bag, food, and general camping supplies. Since there's always a chance your kayak could tip it's a good idea to put your essential supplies in a waterproof bag. That last thing you want is to arrive at your camping spot only to find-out that you can't build a fire.

If your kayaking trip takes place during the winter time (in areas where it doesn't snow) then you'll want to dress accordingly. Remember that being on the water oftentimes means being colder so bring a jacket and warm pants. If you are camping during the winter you'll also want to bring a much warmer sleeping bag and waterproof tent. It's not hard to find a waterproof tent and its worth the extra money if you're camping and it starts pouring rain. There's nothing worse than being stuck in a rainstorm inside a wet tent.

Kayaking is a great activity and allows you to get-away for a day or a weekend and enjoy nature. Kayaking holidays are becoming more and more common so if you haven't taken the whole family kayaking, now might be the perfect time. You might be surprised to find that there are places to kayak right around you!
