Fishing is a fun and easy way to make money in runescape I will split this guide into two sections f2p and p2p.
To get started get a free fishing net from the fishing shop just north of the castle in Lumbridge. Then head down south of the graveyard to begin fishing for shrimps. Continue this until level 5. Sell all your shrimps although this might take a while it will get you some money. Then buy fishing bait and a fishing rod and catch the sardines and herring until level 20, the best place for this is just south of Draynor village, or if you are really desperate for cash go and fish sardines with the net again at 15. This will have netted you some cash. At this point, you can fly fish now this is the best experience in the game. Some argue that barbarian fishing is faster definitely not by much though. Go to barbarian village and fish there. You need feathers and a fly fishing rod for this. Once more, if you are desperate for cash you can bank them but if not you can drop them. Why do you do this you ask this is to make money right? Yes you are here to make money. You will only lose a very little bit if you drop the fish and the levels go by a lot quicker to get to the best money maker for f2p. Once you hit level 40 you want to go to karamja. If you want to keep fly fishing until level 50 then you would get there faster than if you were catching lobsters at karamja but you wouldn't make as much money. Get a lobster pot and 3-5k and head over to karamja. Catch a full inventory of these take the ship back to port sarim and bank them in the deposit box net to the entrana monks. Keep going till you hit level 50 with whatever your doing. Now go to karamja and fish for those swordfish! They are the best money makers pretty much in the game aside from rare drops for free to play. Continue doing this and keep raking in the dough!
P2p is basically the same up until lobsters, then for them you have to go to catherby and fish for the lobsters there. Continue with lobsters or fly fishing until 50 and catch those swordfish. There is a long stretch till 76 and the famed sharks. If you want to get there faster continue fly fishing if you want to make money do swordfish although they are rather low exp. Ahhh 76 when you get there you can try to catch some sharks but it is best to wait till 80-85 unless you desperately need money. Catch sharks at 80-85 then finally the holy grail of fishing, ROCKTAILS! You need a really high defense level to even try to catch these as the cave they are in is infested with level 100+ rock monsters. There are 2 ways to get the bait to catch these fish. You can buy it off of the grand exchange or you can kill the rock monsters and mine their body's for the bait. The fish are currently worth 2k apiece so you could make a big profit off of fishing these little guys. The entrance to the cave is in the dwarven mines.
