Distance learning is a rapidly expanding and very popular method of completing the necessary coursework to obtain a degree or other type of certification of academic accomplishment.  It's no wonder it is becoming so popular.  Distance learning can best be described as the process of online education involving students accessing the educational experience remotely, from a computer connection in their home or some location other than the traditional classroom.  In its infancy, distance learning was met with a certain level of skepticism by opponents to alternative educational delivery methods.  It tended to bring to mind the specter of correspondence courses offered on the back of matchbook covers in years gone by.

Time and experience has certainly changed the image of distance learning, both in the academic world and in the business world where employers are evaluating potential job candidates based on their educational backgrounds and viewing distance learning coursework to be as valuable, in some cases more so, than traditional classroom training.

Why is distance learning so popular?  It's simple.  Distance learning provides a level of freedom difficult to find in any other educational delivery method.  Distance learning works around the life of the student; it does not force the student to conform to the time constraints of traditional educational offerings or to rearrange their entire lives around the pursuit of an education.  Distance learning works to the benefit of teachers and school systems as well.

Distance learning programs can literally be accessed from anywhere in the world.  To the extent that an educational program or degree is offered in part or in whole via distance learning, the student can pursue a course of study while taking care of family obligations, maintaining a full time job and continuing to live where they have always lived.  It is no longer necessary to set aside two, four or even more years to attend college at some distance far from home in order to pursue the desired course of study.

Another popular benefit of distance learning is that it allows the student a certain level of leeway in the approach to studying.  In the traditional classroom, the student must attend at the day and time specified.  The instructor has a certain amount of material to cover in that class time.  If the student fails to grasp parts of the lecture
