Phakic Implantable contact lens is the latest treatment option for myopics or nearsighted. Also known as IOL and ICL.
Phakic Implantable contact lens :
It is a pliable lens injected into the eye which corrects nearsightedness. This procedure corrects refractive powers.5-6mm silicone lenses are inserted into the eye. This procedure is FDA approved.
This procedure is mainly recommended for people who do not want to do or cannot do a LASIK surgery. This procedure is recommended for moderate to severe nearsightedness. The best candidates for this surgery are people whose ages range from 20-45.Consider a case where the power of one eye is -18.0 and another eye is -9.0.No form of lasik surgery can correct this power. The only option available to this patient is Phakic IOL implantation or clear lens extraction with a multifocal IOL implantation, which may give him safer and better results than Lasik surgery.
Complications:
Some complications can occur in this procedure as increase in eye pressure, damage to natural lens and infection.Apart from this redness, bleeding and irritation in the eye. These lenses can be removed if necessary.
The cost of this procedure varies based on lenses used and ranges from 1800$ -3500$.This is a cosmetic procedure and hence insurance coverage is highly unlikely.
