I am not an expert in this area, but let's also consider the issue of marine life, specifically all that use photosynthesis and which produce a major portion of the oxygen all other life must breath.
( It is estimated that between 70% and 80% of the oxygen in the atmosphere is produced by marine plants )
One large plume of oil in addition to the methane threat poses risks to sea life on a global scale due to ocean current's abilities to carry pollutants around the globe. I don't know how long this would take.
Add to the current rate at which we are poring green house gasses into the atmosphere, consider the addition of billions of tons of methane, which is a worse greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Add the co2 added by burning off the oil spill. Add the depletion of marshes that are the nurseries for the plant and animal life that is a part of the vital life cycle of the gulf, and eventually, the oceans and the world.
When methane burns/explodes it consumes oxygen. How much oxygen will immediately be consumed if a billion tons of methane explodes?
Will the fireball hit the shore? If so that will ignite forest fires and burn cities and towns. More oxygen consumed with a firestorm creating a local tornado such as happened in the fire bombings of the second world war...but on an unimaginable scale. And what of the soot added to the green house gases. More sunlight blocked but will this counter the warming or just create another layer to trap in heat. Perhaps we would be in a war between a nuclear winter and runaway greenhouse effect. Neither case is good news for life on Earth as we know it. Oh don't worry about the roaches though...they will do just fine.
If the oceans die...we die. With the worst case methane explosion for some it could be immediate. For life in general it could take years. The end is the same and perhaps those who might go fast, such an end may be a blessing.
I live in Florida some 50 miles from the East coast. I'm not sure how far inland from the Gulf such a tsunami might reach, but I don't want to find out. But if the oceans die there is no safe place remaining on the planet.
