The film is about a lady called Holly (played by Hilary Swank), when she was 19 she married the man of her dreams, Gerry (played by Gerard Butler). The couple are living in a small apartment and Holly is not happy and is always wanting more out of her life. At the very start of the film, we see them having a big row over where they are living and about starting a family. They soon make up!

We then move on to the winter where we are at Gerry's funeral. We learn he died of a brain tumour and his funeral is very interesting as he requested that Holly design his urn and that each person there has a tequila shot. The funeral does turn into good celebration of his life. We then see Holly struggling to get of Gerry's death and she starts to stay away from her friends and family and does not want to live outside of her apartment.

Friends and family descend on Holly as it is her 30th birthday. They find her apartment in a awful mess and Holly smelly and they set about tidying the apartment and helping her to celebrate her birthday. As they are about to open cards and presents a knock at the door brings a delivery to Holly. Inside the box is a cake which has been sent from Gerry, there is also a tape recorder which tells Holly that he will be sending her letters when she needs them and she has to promise to do what he asks he in these letters.

The film goes on to show Holly try to deal with her emotions and try to get her life back on track with the help of her dead husband. Will Holly be able to get her life back and how is Gerry delivering the letters from beyond the grave and will the letters ever stop?

This film was both funny and sad, mixed with heartache. I did find that in places I was getting very emotional as Holly portrayed her emotions in the film very well.

All of the actors were very good and played their parts very well. I liked that addition of Lisa Kudrow as Holly's best friend and though that she was great as the loveable, but daft, lady. She added a lot of humour into the film.

The story was very good. I have not read the book so I cannot make any comparison to the differences or similarities between both. I liked the way the subject of grieving was dealt with and how they portrayed Gerry as being organised and being able to sort all of this out before he finally died from his tumour.

Me and my hubby both though we had worked out who it was delivering the letters but we found we were both wrong!

Throughout the film we see flashbacks to the life of Holly
