When should you apply sunscreen?

Sunscreen is one of the most important things you can own during the summer months. As the temperatures rise and the sun shines down causing scorching heat, applying sunscreen can help prevent sunburns as well as protect the skin from harmful UV rays that can cause skin diseases and other conditions. Everyone should wear sunscreen at all times while outdoors. Babies, children, adults and seniors, coating the body in the sunscreen is one of the best things you can do for yourself during the summer.  It is important to apply a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher before you go out into the sun. The higher the SPF number the better protection from the sun you are offered. Sunscreen should be applied to the entire body, not to forget the face, hands, and feet. It is also a good idea to wear a hat for protecting the head and sunglasses to protect the eyes.

Keep the sunscreen with you at all times! Applying it before going out is not enough! The protection offered by the sunscreen does not last all day long. If you have been outdoors for a period of 2 or more hours, it is time to reapply the sunscreen! Reapplying sunscreen every 2 hours is imperative to receive the maximum protection from the sun. As sweating occurs the lotion or sunscreen is depleted and the effectiveness decreased. Sunscreen must be reapplied every few hours no matter how long you are outdoors.

After going to the swimming pool or any other water, sunscreen should once again be reapplied. Despite many sunscreens claims to be waterproof, those findings have been disputed and will no longer will be allowed to put this on bottles. Apply sunscreen before going into the water and again when you are out of the water. The 2 hour rule does not apply here. Even if you are in the water just a short amount of time, the sunscreen is not waterproof and should be reapplied.

Its better to be safe than sorry. On the days it is extra hot or you have perspired a lot, reapply the sunscreen any time you feel necessary. There is no such thing as to much sunscreen. In the years to come, you will be glad you chose to use sunscreen to protect your body from sun damage! Keep your sunscreen bottle handy, and don't be afraid to use it! Sunscreen is your friend!
