Effects of self-publishing on a writer's career

by William Bond

Created on: July 25, 2010   Last Updated: July 26, 2010

Self publishing can be a positive effect on a writer's career, especially early in the writer's career, and there are enough future traditional publishing successes in your future.  The key to a writer's success is having the ability work hard, establishing a strong body of work publishing both in magazines and in book publishing for a number of years, and establishing a strong audience which will continue to purchase and read your work. The average reader does not care whether the author of the book is self published or published traditionally,  what is most  important is the quality of the writing and how much enjoyment the readers get from reading it. Traditional publishers will accept formally self published authors.

Publishers don't care if you have self published.

Too often writers worry too much about the publisher who is reviewing a book manuscript or a feature article, might reject the work on simply the knowledge the writer has a book or two of self published novels.  Most publishers will read and determine whether the just received book manuscript  will sell in today's book market, and whether the quality of the writing is strong enough to sell for months and years to come in the book stores all over the world.

Ebooks are starting to sell more than bound books.

The electronic books are gaining in popularlity.  There is more and more evidence that people want to read Ebooks because they are usually shorter than books, and they have variety of titles, with unique infomation that is needed in today's world.  Ebooks can be on how to start a business at home, how to make money on the Internet today, how to build your investment portfolio, and how to get out of debt, how to max out your retirement plan, and many other topics which help readers succeed in today's world. Try traditional publishing first, but self publishing can work as well.

Pitch you best work to traditional publishers first.

Before you write a full manuscript, send a book proposal to 4-5 traditional book publishers, giving an overview of the book, a listing of your chapter titles, l-2 sample chapters of the book, write a description of the readers who will buy it, and what you plan on doing to promote it in bookstore readings, and having book parties all over the country.  Let the publisher and editor know you have a passion for your work, and you have a following of readers who want to see your work.  Stay positive, and let the publishing houses know you want to work as a partner with them. Let's sum up.

Summary.  Keep getting published in well known magazines, and even when you get rejected, send it along to other magazines, once you review it and make any needed changes, sometimes a strong article can give you an idea for a novel or a strong nonfiction book idea.  The key is keep  working hard, and get better and better at your craft, writing is an art which takes time, and determination to make it succeed.  You can succeed.  Go for it.
