Not everyone gets to marry a soul mate and not every lover is a potential soul mate.  A soul mate is akin to the Holy Grail where sometimes the search and journey is difficult and long, but the reward definitely worth it. Technically, soul mates are people who have lived past lives together, and in a future life, somehow manage to reconnect again and reaffirm their love.

What soul mates encounter is a quality which transcends time and parameters to be met even if they become separated.  These are some qualities which many people feel make their union is unique, and therefore falls into the category of true soul mates.

Innate Understanding:

Soul mates will often understand each other's inner language, spoken or unspoken, and communication does not necessarily involve verbal interaction.  A soul mate can get into the skin of his/her significant other and have empathy even without direct communication.  Sometimes the silence between them will speak for itself.  Other times, it is merely a touch, a look, eye contact, and the meaning is automatically understood.  The sensitivity between the two can be uncanny.

Past Sex:

Even though soul mates are highly aroused by one another, most of the time, sex does not have to take place.  People deeply in love and are attuned to each other continually watch the movements of his/her soul mate.  It gives them a great deal of visual pleasure to view their soul mate.  As a result, soul mates can flirt all day long with one another because they enjoy each other's company.  Not all marriage partners enjoy their spouse's company and this differentiates the two.

Health and Wealth:

Strength and stability become the stance of soul mates who have the same values of family, honor, love, integrity, and practicing the Golden Rule of doing onto others as you would have done onto you.  Having similar values cement the special bond which soul mates have.  Principles will hold soul mates together because in an ordinary union, you cannot have one partner loving material wealth and the other does not. 

At the same time, family life runs smoother if a couple has similar life goals - such as good health, good eating and exercising.  It's difficult to fit into the mode of soul mate if one partner enjoys and lives fast foods while the other is a vegan.  Often, soul mates will convert their eating styles to the other, even religion, so their union is more complete.
