Job etiquette: Good employment practices

Here are several things I've learned that keep you well-liked at work:

Be honest. If you screw something up, say so. Don't take yourself so seriously. Everyone makes mistakes. Just take note of it and try not to let it happen again. This applies for mistakes big and small.

Be on time, and if you're going to be late, call. Never under any circumstances be a no-call, no-show. You will get fired.

Be nice to everyone, even if they are not nice to you. I have worked with many people I had to be nice to for ages before they were nice back. Being unkind is their problem, not yours.

Have enthusiasm about your work, even if you dislike the people you work with. Nobody likes to work with someone who doesn't want to work.

Get the most out of your job. You may be moving on to better things, but try to get something out of the experience. There is something to be learned in every job. Find out what it is for you and learn it until you leave.

Don't let people walk on you. Although it pays to be kind, it hurts everyone to let people take advantage of you or use you to do their work. If you are always getting called in because everyone else is "sick", start saying no. Set boundaries and people will respect you for it.
