The pros and cons of working as an independent contractor

Being an independent contractor is not as difficult as many would believe.
The benefits are are endless if you are willing to work as diligently for yourself as you would for someone else.
As an independent contractor you have the ability to set your own hours and work out of your home rather than rush around in the mornings to be at work on time, only to have to deal with workplace politics and in many cases, overbearing bosses.

You are paid for the work that you have chosen to complete at a rate that you set rather than work that is piled upon your desk for an hourly wage.
Taxes are never withheld from your pay so you must be diligent enough to set up a schedule to send in your taxes and stick to that schedule. You will also have to find your own health insurance and start your own savings plan for retirement, but if done properly this doesn't have to be a confusing nightmare. There are many, many tax firms that can assist you for very little cost. There are also software programs that are just as effective as an accountant.
Health insurance companies now offer a wide range of individual and family health coverage with reasonable rates. You control what you want to cover. An employers' policy covers only what that particular company can afford to offer its' employees.
The best thing about being and independent contractor is the plain and simple fact that there is always work for anyone willing to work. There are numerous freelance sites on the Internet that post hundreds of jobs on a daily basis.
You can literally work in your pajamas. You can take time to be with your family and friends when you want to. You can take weekends and holidays off and not be the one that has to hold down the fort at work.
As an independent contractor you are in control of the work that you do, the money that you earn and the time and place that you decide to work. But make no mistake, this IS a business and you must treat it like one or you will quickly find yourself back to making that morning commute again!
