How to save money on back-to-school clothing

Every July and August, parents and their children pack the stores looking for the back to school clothing.  Kids want the latest designer items, while parents want the best bargains.  With a little savvy, however, you can get the best of both.

The first step in saving money is seeing how much of their clothing can be salvaged from the previous year.  Hang on to any clothing that still fits, and is in good condition.  This saves a bundle right there, because you don't have to buy a full wardrobe.  If you are able to use a little creativity, you may even be able to alter some of the clothes that don't fit, and make them last another year.  A pair of jeans or pants that still fits around the waist but is too short for example, can be hemmed up to make a pair of bermuda shorts or capri pants.  Girls are easier to do this for than boys, as their clothes can be altered more easily.  Once you have taken inventory of what they need, make a list, and only buy those items.

Now, you have your list and it's time to decide what your budget will be.  Set a realistic budget to cover their needs.  Think about the things you have to spend more on vs the thing that you can spend less money on.  The best rule of thumb is that the less it shows, the less money you need to spend on it.  Things like underwear and socks you can go really cheap.  On the other hand, things like jackets and shoes, you'll want to spend a bit more on.

Ok, time to go shopping.  Shop the clearance racks in department stores, or overstock stores like Ross, Marshalls, TJMaxx and Steinmart for any designer items.  You will be paying discount store prices for them that way, and your kids will be happy because they have higher quality items.  Outlet stores are a good option as well, because they often have nicer items at a lower cost.  You can shop thrift stores as well, but if you are going to, really look at everything you buy.  Make sure there are no stains, rips or other flaws in the clothing.

Following these steps will save you money and your sanity, and keep your kids happy as well.
