I sat out on my front porch this morning and watched the rain fall. Afar off in the forest a fox yipped. Nearer to home I heard the mourning doves calling to each other. The birds were singing out from the shelter of their nests in the oaks and pines of the forest surrounding the farm. Even in the midst of what some might construe as a dreary, damp day I am reminded of God's nature (not the nature of God but God's creation, nature).
The rain that fell this morning replenished the soil and gave the thirsty plants their drink to survive. It refilled the frog pond in my front yard and gave the deer and other animals that inhabit the forest around me much needed drinking water. It gave the hard-working farmer a respite from toiling in his fields as well as revitalizing his crops with the moisture they so desperately need.
The beauty and majesty of God's wisdom is evident in a rain shower as much as in the thunderstorm or the ensuing rainbow or the eventual return of the bright sunshine. There is a sense of peace in the calm, steady rain that can be found nowhere else and at no other time.
There is power, majesty and glory evident in the thunderstorm. As we watch the lightning dance across the sky and hear the thunder roll in the distance we are reminded of the might and power that is God.
There is hope and beauty in the rainbow. The rainbow reminds us of the promises that God has given us of eternity and that there will be a brighter day after the storms of life have passed away.
There is warmth, beauty and glory in the sunshine. The sunshine calls to mind the newness of life in Christ as we walk each day with Him.
The calmness of the rain shower brings to our minds the serenity of that still small voice within. It speaks of the peace that passes all understanding that can calm and soothe our troubled souls. Often we need to be reminded that we need to sit back, listen and be quiet in order to recharge and revitalize for some coming storm or battle that may be just over the horizon of our lives. Spend some quiet time with God today and allow him to refresh you as the rain refreshes the earth.
