Food is something many of us take for granted. It is something far too many are literally dying to have, a thought to be remembered as we consume our daily meals. When we approach our food with full appreciation for not only having it, but for the life it represents, it is filled with the light of love. Pretty left field you say? Not really.
In ages past, we gathered our own food in the wild, of necessity personally taking the life of plant and animal to eat. Eating at restaurants and the ability to purchase processed, packaged meats, boxes of fully prepared grains and perfectly formed, washed and waxed fruits and vegetables has removed us from the reality of what we eat. How many of us have ever consciously considered the fact that something gave its life for nearly every bite we take?
Many cultures still have well defined beliefs regarding food. They have, in some cases, ritualized expressions of gratitude to be observed when hunting, gathering and preparing their meals. Many believe that the plants and animals knowingly 'give' themselves for our benefit. By being thankful for those gifts of life, we honor the sacrifice that makes our meal and life possible.
Thankfulness draws energy and preparing food with love pours it fourth so others may benefit. The power of love heals. It isn't just the natural antibiotics found in chicken that make chicken soup so good for us when we are sick. It is also the fact that someone, even ourselves, took the time and care to prepare that bowl of soup specifically to help us feel better!
If the pace of life demands eating fast foods' or restaurant fare, you can still apply these concepts. A prayer or moment of thankfulness prior to eating is beneficial. This does not necessarily require any particular religious overtones or beliefs. It is simply a conscious choice to be fully aware and appreciative of the meal before you.
On the purely physical plane, this serves to focus your full attention on the meal. By appreciating the sight and aroma, your anticipation of pleasure in eating is heightened. This stimulates your body causing your mouth to water', producing the enzymes that start the digestive process. If you are prepared to enjoy your meal, you will probably take more time to savor and thoroughly chew each bite. Doing this enables your body to extract more of the nutrients you need from the food you are eating. An added bonus is that you will eat less because you are experiencing more satisfaction.
On the spiritual or energy planes, this is an act of "Intent" that is in harmony with the Tao or Way of life. Choosing to be fully aware of the life force held within the food you consume focuses your intent or awareness of being nourished and healed by it, increasing its ability to do just that.
