Outdoor activities and things to do in the Dominican Republic

Created on: July 21, 2010

The Dominican Republic is always busy with tourists coming year round coming in droves.  Other than the fact that the Dominican Republic is another one of the Caribbean’s paradises, there is never a shortage of things to do whether you take advantage of your resorts activity offering or venture out on your own, one thing is for sure, and there is never a dull moment.

Biking

Mountain biking is very popular, and Iguana Mama, a tour operator based in Cabrete has guided tours as well as bike rentals for visitors to partake in. A full day trip costs about $90 for adults and $70 for children, which also includes breakfast and lunch.  Also you can arrange pick up with the company from practically anywhere around the island for a small fee.

Boating

Sailing conditions on the Dominican Republic tend to be optimal the majority of the time.  Visits to Catalina Island and Saona Island are very popular as well as sunset cruises.  Prices for excursions vary and can range from about $120 to $700 for a full day boat rental.  The full- service marina LaMarina Punta Cana also rents small boats by the half or full day.

Diving and Snorkeling

Most divers tend to frequent the north shore because there are about a dozen or so excellent dive spots in the waters off Sosua.  Northern Coast Aquasports is a 5 star PADI dive center based in Sosua, there you can arrange trips to explore the reefs, and shipwrecks, amongst many other things.  They also offer a three day course that gains a PADI Open Water Certification Card.  Viva Diving, based in the Viva Wyndham Samana Resort, offers a catamaran snorkeling trip, and you can also get both your PADI and SSI certifications through the company.

Fishing

LaMarina Chavon is one of the best fishing charter operators in the La Romana area.  You ca go out so you can get a chance to try and catch a few marlin and wahoo fish, very popular fish in the area.  Also, LaMarina Punta Cana at the Punta Cana Resort and Club offer half and full day deep fishing excursions.

Golf

It can easily be stated that the Dominican Republic has some of the best courses in the entire Caribbean receiving accolades from several well respected sources.  Not only are these courses designed by some of golf’s best architects, but many are attached to a hotel, so you won’t have to travel far for you tee time.  Golf Magazine has called “Teeth of the Dog”
