Christmas craft is always popular and creating new and unusual tree decorations is an interesting way of whiling away an hour or two. Christmas craft opens up a whole new world and each tree decoration that you are able to successfully complete gives an enormous sense of satisfaction.
Decoupage
Styrofoam tree decorations can be time consuming to make bit the finished project is always worthwhile. Decoupage is an old craft that takes little in the way of equipment. As long as you have some pretty wrapping paper or some decoupage sheets, some glue and a small Styrofoam ball then you are well on your way to making your first tree decoration. The Victorians loved craft and decoupage was highly favoured. Take a look on-line and you will find some free decoupage sheets that can be downloaded and printed out.
You will need:
• One small Styrofoam ball
• Some PVA glue
• A medium-sized glue brush
• Some decoupage cut outs or sheets
• A length of fine ribbon
• Some clear acrylic varnish
• A pair of scissors
Craft can be messy so make sure that you cover the table or the counter where you intend to work. Choose the theme for your tree ball and cut and set aside the decoupage pieces ready to glue onto the surface of the Styrofoam ball. Pour some of the craft glue into a saucer and put your glue brush ready. If you are using ready cut decoupage pieces than the task will be much easier.
Apply a thin layer of craft glue to the back of one of the decoupage cut outs. Glue one piece at a time and stick the piece onto the surface of the Styrofoam ball. Decoupage looks so good if the pieces overlap. If you have a special paper cut out that you would like to be prominent then add that paper piece last of all. Craft glue like PVA dries to a clear finish. As you cover the Styrofoam ball the glue will dry off without spoiling the deisgns on the paper cut outs. When the whole Styrofoam ball has been covered in decoupage paper cut outs then set it to one side to dry off.
You will need to craft a ribbon loopso that the finished tree decoration can hang. Take a short length of thin ribbon and glue it to the ball so that it forms the hanging loop. Take your clear acrylic varnish and give the tree decoration a couple of coats. The varnish will make the tree decoration shine and give it a lasting finish.
