NEWSFLASH! If you eat foods that have labels on the box stating "NO Trans fat" - you may still be eating trans fat. FDA guidelines state that a food manufacturer may list their food item as "ZERO trans fat" as long as there is 1/2 gram or less trans fat per serving. Many people eat more than one serving of these junk food items. The public is being tricked into buying these foods that claim they are trans fat free.
CHECK THE INGREDIENTS. If you see "hydrogenated oil or partially hydrogenated oil" there are trans fats in the item. Trans fats are used in processed foods to help maintain flavor and add to shelf life (prevent item from going stale). Crackers, cookies, snack pastries, processed cheeses and dressings are common items that have trans fats.
The consumption of trans fatty acids contributes to increased levels of LDL ("bad") cholesterol, which increases the risk of coronary heart disease. Foods high in trans fatty acids tend to raise blood cholesterol.
Many people will say "you only live once", but think about the quality of life after you've had a heart attack,(if you survived) and have to spend your life in and out of hospitals, on medications. Prevention is the smarter way to a healthier, happier, longer life.
