Freelance writing is a very rewarding career that gives you a great deal of freedom over other types of jobs. There are some common expenses to think about when considering a freelance writing career. These expenses consume a great deal of any money that you make while pursuing the career.
Common Expenses for Freelance Writers:
Pen/Pencils and Paper- One of the most common and necessary items that freelance writers need in order to get their work done is pens, pencils and paper. Without these three things, the freelance writer cannot be a writer. Though it is true that you will eventually put your ideas into the computer for completion, these items are essential to getting the idea off the ground. Old fashioned pen and paper will allow you to write down your rough ideas and turn them into your personal masterpieces. It doesn't tie you down quite the way a computer does either. You can use it anywhere you go. Be prepared to go through a lot of ink and paper before the final draft is complete.
Computers- Freelancing also requires that you use a computer. Today's world requires the use of computer in writing ventures. It helps you save on paper for one thing, but it has great benefits beyond that. Using the internet for freelance writing will help pay the bills. There are far too many venues to make money on the internet to pass up the chance.
Word Processing Software- If your intention is to become serious about freelance writing, you will need to invest in good word processing software packages. The most noted is Microsoft Word for Windows. This program will give you all the freedom you need to make changes and catch errors that you might not otherwise catch. Saving your work this way also allows you to go back later and make some changes to turn it into a completely different piece than you had before. Don't get caught without a word processing software package.
Printer/Copier- Freelance writers often need to print work from their computer and make copies as well. This is a common expense for the freelance writer that is necessary in getting the job done correctly. A printer and copier can change the way you do business. You don't have to purchase an expensive set of equipment to get the job done either. The one that comes with your computer will usually do the trick.
Office Space- Whether you are freelancing from home or you want to get out of the home for a while, you need to pay for office space. If you are working from home, you have to designate an area
