Best materials and tools for making home-made jewelry

I find that colored seed-beads and jewels in home-made jewelry look cheap. This type of jewelry is also very common. It has lost its charm. I suggest instead using thin rope, colored cord, or twine to make jewelry. Pick up a book on knots or search online for easy knot-tying tutorials.

A few simple knots that work well as "charms" on chokers, bracelets, or anklets are the Figure Eight Bend, the Zeppelin Bend, or the Fisherman's Bend. Use two contrasting or complimentary colors for quick and easy jewelry.

There are several more complex knots that are very decorate as well. These include the Good Luck Knot which some superstitious travelers I know carry with them on their trips. The Round Mat and the Carrick Mat are quite beautiful as well. If enough rope is used, these knots can even be used as door mats.

Braid Knots, Four-Strand Braid Knots, and Four-Strand Sennits can be used to make chains for bracelets and anklets. I find that the chain created is a bit too chunky for use as a necklace, however.

Using knots in your home-made jewelry allows you to create unique necklaces, bracelets, and anklets, sure to wow your friends.
