Tips for choosing the best after-school programs

Finding the right after school program, which fits your budget, schedule, and child’s needs, can be tricky. This is mainly due to the ever increasing prevalence of after school programs. While the large number gives you many options to choose from, it also makes selecting one difficult.

My first recommendation is don’t be afraid to shop around. Make a list of your ideal program (location, schedule, cost, activities, ect.). Then, do some research. Go on the Internet and search for programs online. Ask other families what program their children will be attending. Once you get information on various programs, see how they match up with your ideals. You will want a program that is attached to some larger group (like a school or church). This will make it more established and give it financial backing should any liability claim arise during your child’s time there. I know that is an unpleasant thing to think about, but it must be on your mind. Consider your child’s interests heavily. Are they enthusiastic about sports? Do they like the outdoors? Do they need a place to do homework after school, or just play? While cost and location are a factor, you still want to make sure your primary concern is the child. If they are unhappy in a setting, it will surely effect their time in school. If all they can think about from the hours of 8-3 is how the hours of 3-6 are going to be miserable, they are likely to lose focus on their school work.

Most programs will also offer some sort of open house, where parents and children can visit and interact with the staff. Alternatively, some will even offer a free test week to children. Take advantage of these offers. Ask the questions that need to be asked. Always remember, no need to settle right away, as I said there are plenty of programs out there.

Lastly, a word on safety. This is the most important aspect of finding a program for your child. It will separate the good programs from the poor ones. Does the program have a license to operate? How much supervision is given to the children? What is the staff to child ratio? Are staff CPR certified? Will there be any swimming involved? If so, do you have certified lifeguards on staff? These are all questions that must be asked. If you don’t receive the answers you want and expect, look elsewhere.
